How does UnitedHealthcare define specialty medications? A specialty medication typically has the following attributes:
- The medication is relatively high-cost.
- It may treat a rare or complex disease. (See condition list.)
- Typically, it's an oral, inhaled, injected or infused prescription medication, and may be self-administered or given in a doctor's office, at home or in a hospital outpatient setting.
- It may require additional, ongoing clinical oversight — including dosage and adherence monitoring.
